Student Overseas Visit and Research Selection

1. Purpose

The National Center for Theoretical Sciences (NCTS) is dedicated to nurturing mathematical talent. To enhance students’ research abilities, broaden their horizons, and increase international exchange opportunities, the Center provides resources and financial support to select outstanding students for 2- to 4-month visits and research stays at foreign universities or research institutions. Female students are especially encouraged to apply.

2. Eligibility

Students with Republic of China (Taiwan) nationality and enrolled in mathematics-related departments at universities or colleges in Taiwan. Eligible applicants include:

  • Undergraduate students in their 3rd year or above
  • Master’s students
  • PhD students

3. Application Materials

Please submit the following materials in PDF format to apply2@ncts.tw:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – must include contact information (mobile number and email address)
  2. Academic Transcripts
    • Master’s and direct PhD students: include undergraduate transcripts as well
    • Other PhD students: include master’s transcripts as well
  3. Personal Statement – up to 2 pages, including: learning and research experience and interests, motivation for the visit, preparation and research plan, and future career plans
  4. Proof of English proficiency and other supporting documents, such as personal research achievements or letters of interest from prospective supervisors
  5. Recommendation Letter – one letter from a professor. The professor should send the recommendation directly to apply2@ncts.tw

4. Application Timeline

Applications are open immediately and will close on October 27, 2025.

5. Number of Awards and Funding

Up to 10 students will be selected. The funding amount will be determined after the visit plan is confirmed, up to NT$150,000. Applicants are welcome to seek other funding sources as well; any other support must be disclosed when the Center determines the funding amount.

6. Selection Procedure

Applications will be reviewed in writing, and selected candidates will be invited for interviews. Final approval will be granted by the Executive Committee, after which the results will be announced. Students must maintain close contact with the Center regarding the visit. By the end of February 2026, overseas supervisors and the research plan must be finalized; failure to do so will result in loss of funding eligibility. The Center only provides funding and, if necessary, advisory guidance; it does not handle enrollment or credit recognition matters.

7. Execution Period

June 2026 – May 2027 (students must maintain valid Taiwan enrollment for financial reimbursement purposes)

8. Announcement of Selected Students

The selection results are expected to be announced in December 2025.

9. Execution Requirements

Students participating in the program must submit a complete English final report within one month after returning to Taiwan. Additionally, they are required to participate in research content and experience-sharing activities organized by the Center at a later date.

10. Information Session

To help students better understand the program, an information session will be held in September. Alumni will share their experiences in the application process, daily research abroad, and life overseas. There will also be a Q&A session. All students are welcome to attend.
