| Title | Torus, Torus, Torus! |
| Abstract | Every lattice in the complex plane gives rise to a complex torus, and hence to an elliptic curve. But when do two lattices give rise to isomorphic elliptic curves? This question leads naturally to the action of the modular group on the upper half-plane. We will explore its fundamental domain and see how the space of complex elliptic curves can be compactified into a Riemann surface of genus zero, known as the modular curve X(1). If time permits, we will also take a first look at modular functions. Registration Link: https://forms.gle/F5GdEeDDb4uZzZ4p9 |
