TITLEThe Competition Between Red and Grey Squirrels: a Mathematical Approach

ABSTRACT The competition is a common interaction among species and forms one of the interesting topics in mathematical ecology. A classical example is the replacement of the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) by the invasive grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) in Britain. A remarkable work done by Okubo et al. (1989) considered a two-species competition-diffusion model to describe the interaction between them. In terms of the traveling waves, the invasion speed can be estimated. In this talk, we would like to provide another approach to model this phenomenon and provide some biological thoughts.
