TITLEA Numerical Differential Equation Approach for Freeform Design

ABSTRACT A basic freeform design problem is to design an optical surface that can convert the radiant flux emitted from a point source onto a prescribed illumination. The freeform that characterizes the correspondence between a given light source and a prescribed illuminance on a target domain can be represented by the solution of a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) of Monge-Amp ere (MA) type. In this talk, we shall briefly introduce the optical freeform design problem and the Monge-Ampere equation which appears in various research fields including differential geometry, mass transportation, geostrophic fluid and optical design. We shall also introduce some of nuemrical methods to solve the MA equation. Finally, we introduce our skew free-from design method and show some of our nuemrical results.
